About the founder.

Hi! I’m Kara: Medical speech-language pathologist, concussion survivor, and brain wellness advocate.

My concussion story started in April 2014 with a bad fall. Soon I found myself overwhelmed with sudden loss of cognitive functioning and the effects of physical symptoms. Despite a supportive family and great therapists, recovery felt slow. Then a car accident complicated things. Recovery became slower and messier. It took 20+ providers and a lot of determination for life to feel manageable again.

I spent many years traveling the long road to recovery and learning everything I could to help others along the way.

After graduation I got a job as an outpatient speech-language pathologist to work with other brain injury survivors. Each story was unique, but many experienced similar frustrations with persistent changes in cognition.

I began to dream of building one place to talk about cognition from both a medical and personal perspective. I wanted to talk about the science behind thinking skills and evidence-based treatment, but also the messy parts of head injury recovery and how to cope.

Rethink Speech Therapy was founded in 2020 to do just that. You’ll find education and printable handouts to help you understand brain injury and learn solutions so that you can make the next confident step towards recovery.
