What is cognitive coaching?

Cognitive Coaching is a creative and collaborative approach to managing changes in cognitive skills.

You may have trouble:

  • staying organized.

  • managing your time.

  • starting or finishing tasks.

  • remembering.

  • staying focused.

Even mild difficulty with these skills can make life stressful. Clients tell me that they:

  • feel overwhelmed.

  • feel like they can’t get anything done.

  • start ten tasks without finishing them.

  • spend twice as long completing simple tasks.

  • scramble to keep up with their old schedule.

  • make and lose lots of lists.

You may already have tools that help you remember or stay organized. But, something’s still missing. Coaching helps you pinpoint where you are struggling, fine-tune your strategies, and practice skills to improve your weaknesses.

Who benefits from coaching?

You may have always had trouble with these skills, or you’re trying to get them back after an injury or illness. Cognitive coaching can help people struggling with cognitive skills following:

  • Concussion/Brain Injury

  • Stroke

  • Brain Aneurysm

  • Brain tumor removal

  • Functional Neurological Disorder

  • Post-COVID-19 syndrome

Coaching is best if you have been through a traditional therapy program but need help continuing your progress. Maybe you feel like therapy ended too soon. Or, you need a cheerleader to help you keep doing the things that helped you. Coaching provides a helping hand so you don’t have to keep going alone.

About Kara.

In 2014, I experienced sudden loss of cognitive functioning during my first year of graduate school. One moment I was going to school, working, and volunteering. The next moment a bad fall changed all of my plans.

Life became muddled with forgotten conversations and missed deadlines. I worked so hard to keep moving forward but even simple tasks took all of my time and energy.

Slowly but surely I did get better. I found a great medical rehabilitation team that helped me get back on my feet. I also learned how to heal my body through nutrition and exercise. It wasn’t easy, but eventually I felt like myself again.

I finished my degree in speech-language pathology and became a certified brain injury specialist. Then, I got a job at the same hospital that helped me recover. I’m proud to now specialize in cognitive therapy and help other people get back on their feet.

I soon realized that I also wanted to help people outside of the traditional medical model. I watched patients struggle to keep moving forward when rehab ended. Like me, they didn’t know what to do when they felt a lot better but not all the way better.

So, I started Rethink Speech Therapy in 2020. Maybe you feel like therapy ended too soon and you wonder what else you can do to feel better. Maybe you feel confident now but you want to start a new job or degree and aren’t sure how it will go. Or, you need a cheerleader to help you keep doing the things that help you succeed. My holistic approach combines cognitive strategy training and lifestyle coaching to help life feel manageable again.

Contact me to get started. Together, let’s reach the next step in your recovery.

Therapy vs Coaching

Coaching is different than therapy. Cognitive therapy is done by a licensed professional at a healthcare facility and may be covered by insurance. It is best for people just starting to get help after a brain injury. You might see a speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, or neuropsychologist who specializes in brain injury rehabilitation. Send me an email if you need help finding professionals in your area. Read more about rehabilitation here.

Cognitive coaching is designed to help you reach the next step in your recovery journey. You may be on the road to recovery with great tools to help you feel better. But, something is still missing. Coaching provides a helping hand to set achievable goals, fine-tune the strategies you have, and reach the next step. Contact me if you are interested in learning more about my coaching program.
